(Original Subject title: Who will be coming back on March 30th? edited subject now that the season has begun & we are starting to see the prospects trickle onto Buck's bench) The prospects are looking pretty good this spring training.
Baty: .500-1-4 in 12 AB Mauricio: .375-3-5 in 8 AB
Meanwhile Vientos is striking out a ton as expected and Alvarez has also struck out in 3 of his 6 ABs, and Parada and Ramirez haven't done much.
On the pitching side the only true prospects to appear have been Montes de Oca and Butto (unless I'm missing somebody) and there's not much to talk about yet.
There's a LOT of time to go even in spring training, but who do you think will make the opening day roster? I think the only one with a legitimate shot is Baty, with only Alvarez, Vientos and Montes de Oca coming up throughout the season. I know Mauricio is making the headlines but it's just really hard to imagine him being here before September.

Vientos was my early top pick, but yea, SSS, but he's put himself in a bit of a hole.
Alverez in my opinion never had a chance. He's going to catch, learn his craft, and get some AAA seasoning.
Baty has moved into the top slot for most likely. He needs to really crush ST, and he's off to a good start, but he needs more than 13 PA to win the job. While my best guess is none make the opening day roster, the only reason I'll put Baty in the lead is because he'll get the opportunity to really have some starting ABs with the entire IF going to the WBC...
I'll say this though, Mauricio is making an unexpected push out of no where. First the fall league. Now this. A bit crazy, in the most exciting way possible.
Lastly: Pitchers. Meh. BP filler. Which also means yes, they'll likely be up before the end of the year. Necessary, but wholly unexciting.

both of the HRs were impressive shots to center field...however, that single in the first inning was "smoked" as well

Yeah Vientos can really hit when he makes contact. All of those strikeouts could make for some long games but I feel more confident now that he might be here in place of Ruf than I was before ST started. Mauricio is looking more and more like a possible replacement for Canha next year to me, though I know that OF talk with him has kind of died down.

well they have eliminated Mauricio and Alvarez from the major league camp already...now the ST lineups are getting pretty boring

Not surprising. After that blistering start, Mauricio cooled off significantly, and Alverez obviously never had a hot streak.
Let both get daily ABs at AAA, and let's see where they stand after 200 plate appearances.

yeah I know...but at the same time, I can't bring myself to watching spring training games that have Ruf, Pham and Luis G all in the same lineup...it's like watching 3 relief pitchers try to pretend to hold a bat...

no knock on Luis G, he's a fine defensive utility "reserve" player...but not much of a hitter

well apparently the Mets decided to have more talent in Syracuse than at certain positions in Queens since none of the youngsters made it...

I can't say I really blame them.
1) Brett Baty cooled off considerably. In March, he hit .273/.429/.303. 33 ABs, 1 DB, 0 HR. Baty's one chance was to be CRUSHING it at the decision time. He was not. He needs to go down, work on hitting the ball with some power and put it all together.
2) Mark Vientos - he was hitting the ball a little better, but not MUCH. His 2 HRs were on the 1 day we cataloged above, none aside from those. He does have 2 doubles in his last 9 ABs, and has a respectable March split of 279/319/512. So if anything, I'm more surprised they haven't given him a chance than Baty who is receiving the louder cries, but it's hard to argue Vientos gave the Mets no choice...
A comparison to someone who gave them no choice? Pete Alonso, 2019. 352/387/620. Now THAT was dynamite.
I think they wanted Voggy to win the job and despite having a MISERABLE spring himself. Voggy's 2022 Mets slash of 255/393/436 was enough to keep Vientos in the minors as depth for the time being. The clear advantage is by keeping him in the minors, you have flexibility for the future. If you keep Vientos for now and cut Voggy, there is no going back.

Yeah I know everyone wants to see Baty up here but Escobar also finished 2022 very well. Sure he's not a good fielder but then neither is Baty.
All of these guys will be up at some point this year. The fan base REALLY hates Vogelbach and Pham though I don't understand it. Ruf I got, though you'd think JD Davis was Babe Ruth the way people are valuing him in that trade. The heart of this lineup is very strong, it all depends on how the fringes do.

I thought that Escobar is a pretty decent fielder...may not be Brooks Robinson, but better than David Wright or Derek Jeter were in their respective positions....
my problem with Escobar is that he doesn't hit RHP very consistently. He's fine in a platoon but not really an every day hitter

I've been seeing the "bad fielder" comments on twitter as well. I was also surprised.
My initial guess was that the masses, in order to justify Baty, are trying to tear down Escobar. A little revisionist story telling.

Well he didn't make it initially, but Alvarez is being called back to the 26 man roster...
