IMO, the biggest concern with the prospects is the lack of pitching prospects...Do we have any legit pitching prospects at any level? I think it's pretty obvious we're thin with pitching prospects. Tidwell and Ziegler are promising but still at least two seasons away. I did read an SNY article on Vasil who is looking pretty good and could be coming up later this year. You can add Hamel to that list of guys still at least a year away (might surface sooner than Tidwell and Ziegler as he was a college arm). Matt Allen, will he ever return? At least 2 years away. But no. We've seen the best of what the Mets upper system has to offer, and it ain't much. Might we finally see Scherzer and Verlander hit a stride together? I've got tickets to see Verlander tomorrow, fingers crossed he doesn't disappoint. Cookie coming back soon, and he has to be at least better than the replacements we've been watching. If these guys can hold it together (like physically, duct tape if need be), then we may be able to survive with the minimal use of the reinforcements we have. Megill, Peterson, Lucchessi, these guys I can handle here and there. Its killer having all 3 as regular members of the rotation AND still having to see guys like Butto starting games.

It's kind of amazing how long it's been since this organization has produced a top of the rotation (or even middle of the rotation) arm. Allan really looked to be that pitcher but so much for that.
True about Hamel, they actually have him earmarked for 2024 vs. the other two in 2025. That feels like 10 years from now. It would be nice to have Scherzer and Verlander somehow make it through the end of next year as effective pitchers but it just feels like skating on thin ice for way too long.

My hope is Scherzer has a great year this year (obvious statement alert, lol), but then chooses to opt out for next year and that the Mets let him walk. Considering he has a 43 million dollar player option, I don't see it happening, but maybe if he feels he can get 60M guaranteed over 2, or 90 over 3 if he will opts out. I would then like to use that Scherzer money + a bit more on Othani...
As for the kids, in the span since Harvey/DeGrom/Thor/Wheeler came up (I could Thor and Wheeler as they were Single A when we traded for them), we have traded:
Michael Fulmer (1st) Justin Dunn (1st) Anthony Kay (1st) JT Ginn (2nd) Josh Wolf (2nd) Simeon Woods Richardson (2nd) Matt Koch (3rd)
And had what can now be called busts
Peterson (1st) Rocker (1st)
So seeing it laid out like that, not surprising we don't have any reinforcements. We've spent the last 8 years trading away everyone but Peterson...

Very true, though in all fairness only Fulmer has had any real success at the major league level. They're not even drafting good pitching even if they were somewhat valued by other teams as trade chips.

Mets call up prospect Mark Vientos, per sources:
How will his bat fit in New York’s lineup?
Tim Britton, Will Sammon, Keith Law
theathletic.com/4527523/2023/05/17/mark-vientos-mets-call-up/The Mets are calling up prospect Mark Vientos, league sources confirmed to The Athletic on Wednesday.
Here’s what you need to know: Through 38 games with Triple-A Syracuse this season, Vientos is batting .333 with 13 home runs and 37 RBIs.
Vientos ranked No. 7 on The Athletic’s Keith Law’s top 20 Mets prospects list for 2023.
Vientos has split time at third base and first base this season.
A 2017 second-round pick by New York, Vientos made his MLB debut in September, recording his first hit in his fourth game. The Athletic’s instant analysis:
Why now? Vientos has spent more than a year crushing the ball at Triple A, showcasing a type of power that the major-league roster severely lacks. Before they homered three times Tuesday, the Mets had gone more than 50 innings without a long ball — their longest drought since July 2015, the week before they both called up top prospect Michael Conforto and traded for Yoenis Céspedes. Vientos, meanwhile, has 40 homers in 150 career Triple-A games. He’s mashed both lefties and righties this season and significantly lowered his strikeout rate. Buck Showalter talks often about how he wants to see minor leaguers master a level. Vientos has obviously mastered Triple A offensively. — Britton
How does he fit? The Mets have been cautious to call up Vientos because of the lack of a clear role. His primary defensive positions are first base and third base; the Mets are covered at both. That leaves the DH spot for Vientos, along with Daniel Vogelbach and Tommy Pham. The club has repeatedly cited its affinity for Vogelbach’s on-base prowess, even as the power hasn’t followed, and it has liked Pham’s exit velocities, even without on-field results. Vientos wouldn’t be called up if he wasn’t going to at least see the short side of the DH platoon, with starts against lefties. His success this season against righties — a .327 average, .415 on-base percentage and outrageous .690 slugging — mean the Mets could just give him run as the everyday DH to see how it works. — Britton
Scouting report Vientos makes very hard contact that should lead to 20-30 homers a year in the majors depending on how much he’s able to put the ball in play, as he’s been a high-whiff guy in Triple A, especially on pitches in the zone that he should hit. It’s possible cutting down on the strikeouts will cost him power and this is just what he is: a low-OBP, high-power guy who can sort of handle third but would be better at first. — Law

Vientos.
Since April 22: 20 games, 12 runs scored; 6 doubles; 7 Home Runs; 20 RBI; 10 Walks; 15 strikeouts; .325 average; .400 OBP; .675 SLugging Percentage; 1.075 OPS
In those 20 games, 7 of those 15 K's came in 3 games. 4/27, 2 K's in a game that he hit a Home Run; 5/2, 2 K's in a game that he hit a Home Run, 2 Hits and 3 RBI; 5/11, 3 K's in one of the first games that Beltran and his entourage were there to watch.

Hopefully he gets the nod tonight. After last night's Verlander home debut stinker, I'm hoping to go 1-1 on my Citi field visit and a Vientos smash would be exciting as all hell.

It'll be interesting to see if he's really made the adjustment or not. Major league pitchers are a whole lot more effective at setting up players for the out pitch. Hey if he settles in to be a great DH then it's a huge upgrade.

Well we won't find out if he can handle the DH today. Vientos playing 3B so he can continue to give ABs to Pham with his .188 average... I'm souring on Buck much like I soured on Terry's insistence on giving vets ABs over up and coming players like Baty (who in case Buck forgot, hit a HR last night!!!). Yes, he's a lefty starter, but he's a SHITTY left starter.
LET THE KIDS PLAY!

kind of makes sense (not)...Batty had a Home Run last night, is hitting LHP better than RHP, so of course Buck gives him the night off...some times I think that both Buck and Bobby V love/loved to see if they could rest a player AFTER hitting the ball hard, instead of when they have an 0-fer...

IMO, Baty is/was used to throwing to Vientos...Vientos is a better 1B than 3B...I would have given Vientos the start at 1B, Baty the start at 3B and Alonso DH'ing for Vientos first game back...
by the way, Tommy Pham is 1 for 10 with no XBH's in the past 7 days... Pete Alonso continues to get pitched around because nobody around him in the lineup is a threat...
I really hope that this is just Buck and the GM giving Pham one last look before saying bye bye bye to Pham

Didn't realize that we never started an Alvarez thread. Big 3 run homer in the bottom of the 9th tonight that was crushed.

PLAY THE KIDS! they may syringe out more than vets, but they'll add exuberance to this flat club which can grow into momentum. I won't expect fireworks from them every night, but man, was last night exciting!!! Games like that are why I go to the park
