obviously Lindor is safe, whether he should be or not is another story...
I also think that Alonso and Nimmo are safe, just not sure that they will be the 1B/CF next season or whether Alonso is a DH with Nimmo being a corner OFer...

I would really like to see Sandy sail off into retirement...his brand of baseball is almost unwatchable even when we win...

I see no purpose in keeping Baez and this year's version of Conforto is horrible

I like Villar as a supersub...may not have the OBP or defense to play as an every day player, but he has power/speed, can hit from both sides of the plate...hits well in Citi Field (better than Alonso and a few others at least)...and is adequate at 2B/SS and ok at 3B...

McNeil and Dom are debatable whether they warrant holding onto...there really is nothing that McNeil does that is extraordinary...
while offensively neither catcher is anything to write home about, both have helped control the running game better than in recent years, so until our catching prospect is ready, I think both are safe

not much to say about the pitching staff...the regular starters when healthy aren't bad, if they decide to return...and bullpens are disposable like napkins or paper towels, you use them until they aren't useful anymore and then you replace them with ones that you think can clean up the mess

fyi,
When Villar is batting leadoff, he scores a run once every 5.625 Plate Appearances; When Nimmo is batting leadoff, he scores a run once every 7.447 Plate Appearances;

fyi, When Villar is batting leadoff, he scores a run once every 5.625 Plate Appearances; When Nimmo is batting leadoff, he scores a run once every 7.447 Plate Appearances; this may seem insignificant, since Nimmo gets on base a lot but if both had 700 Plate Appearances on the year, it would translate into: Villar (per 700 PA as leadoff): 124.44 runs Nimmo (per 700 PA as leadoff): 93.997 runs What is the chance that Nimmo stays healthy enough in a season for 700 PA's? However, if Villar could keep up that pace and be healthy, that is Jose Reyes in 2006 material (Reyes scored 122 runs in 703 PA's in 2006)...Speed combined with Power at a .350 OBP trumps a .400 OBP with little baserunning/power numbers

I was not a fan of the Villar signing but he has been much better than I expected. He is miles ahead of Davis at 3B and if Davis isn't hitting, he has very little to no value.

Dom has regressed to the point where he has lost his spot to McNeil, who is having a shit year himself. I don't know what to do with Conforto. I think he is better than this year but not as good as last year.

I have always thought that Conforto and Nimmo were redundant with Conforto being the one that we should keep. However, this year Nimmo broke out while Conforto no longer looks like a competent hitter. Without Conforto, we can slide Nimmo to a corner OF position where he is better suited.

It's going to be one action-packed offseason, at least hopefully. The question really comes down to whether these off years were just outliers, due to coaching or something similar, or true trends.
Conforto was getting better every year from 2018-2020 (even though of course 2020 was a small sample) so it's just astounding that he was so lost this year. Every time I watched him at the plate I thought he just looked a little off, lacking confidence. If it was up to me, I'd keep him next year. Not only because he has a track record that is a lot better than he showed in 2021 but also because if he doesn't stay, who plays RF? There are a few options that I see:
1) Move Nimmo to RF and insert a new CF. If they really believe Lee is ready that could be the solution, but if not do you resign Pillar and put him in CF as a regular? He had a bunch of clutch moments but overall Pillar really wasn't good enough to warrant being a starter.
2) Sign a big name to play RF. There seems to be two avenues here:
- Castellanos, which has three big drawbacks: high salary, loss of draft pick and the possibility that he reverts to pre-Cincy numbers when back in a park like Comerica.
- Bryant, who would have to agree to mainly play RF vs. 3B because that's where the biggest need is. He also seemed to lose interest in baseball before going to SF, but he definitely seems invigorated now. With Baty/Vientos coming up soon though is this a smart move?
Based on performance and need I'd jettison:
Smith Davis McNeil (a painful one but he's completely changed his approach to the plate and there is infield coverage for what he does)
Bring back:
C: McCann, Nido, IF: Alonso, Lindor, Cano (unfortunately), Villar, Nimmo, Guillorme OF: Conforto, Pillar
This gives them a chance to sign an impact player for LF and look at Baez or someone else for 2B. It also keeps space open down the road for Baty, Vientos, Mauricio, and Alvarez.

you have provided some good scenarios there Thomas...
one thing to consider with bringing back Conforto, is that you aren't getting him back without a "qualifying offer"...Is the 2021 version of Conforto worth $19 Mil in 2022? which also makes me wonder how they handle Noah Syndergaard since he's also a FA, despite not having any track record in a couple seasons
