what a haul. My notes in parenthesis
•(Former 4) LHP Mackenzie Gore •(1) OF Robert Hassell III •(Former 1) SS C.J. Abrams •(3) OF James Wood •(14) RHP Jarlin Susana •(Likely recent high pick) MLB player to be named later
In my opinion, the Padres just became the team to beat. Remember, they've stayed in the race without Tatis Jr. Now, with Soto and Bell, that line up is downright terrifying.
I wonder what the long term impact of this trade will be. Are they are going to be SCARY for the next decade? Or have they fallen into the trap of "superstars without supporting cast" Their 2022 lux tax payroll is 220MM. Not including Soto, 2023 lux tax payroll estimate will be around 190 after arbitration. Machado makes a pretty penny. Tatis is going to get pricier per his deal. Soto is going to be VERY expensive. Musgrove is getting 20MM per his deal. As people start to phase out, who is going to replace them? Can they afford additional free agents? Is anyone MLB ready left in the farm? Be curious to see where the next 3-5 years take them. Might not matter if they can win a ring or 2 in that same span.

Dan O'Dowd said that is about the best deal the Nats could make. He said it's like 4 drafts in one because they received four #1 picks.
And the Padres still get the best player in the deal...

and on top of that, the Padres unloaded an overpriced crappy veteran in the deal: Eric Hosmer hasn't been a good player since he was on the Royals...so the Nats take on him and $39 Mil of remaining salary after this season...Bell's contract is up at the end of the season, and he's only making $12 Mil so it's not like this year's Padres salary is impacted much at all...

I didn't see Hosmer. You sure he's part of it? I think the Padres are keeping him from what I've seen.

Without a farm system, do they become the Angels? Or can they find a way to sustain success.

He was part of the deal announced on MLB Network...but apparently since then, it's been updated and Eric Hosmer refused to be traded to the Nats (They were one of the 10 teams that he could block a trade to):

I'm sure Hosmer is waiting for a sweetener before he accepts the trade. Still, has to be hard to accept, to go from a WC team to the last place Nats. I doubt there's much of a market for Hosmer at $7M this season and $13M per for the next three.

they should just release him...and then have the Nats pick him up off of waivers...Hosmer's always been one of those guys like Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley that just seems so facking smug

12:25pm: Mark Feinsand of MLB.com confirms (Twitter link) that Hosmer is no longer part of the trade. 11:50am: Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports (on Twitter) that Hosmer is no longer involved in the deal after refusing to waive his no-trade protection. Soto is still being traded to San Diego, but it remains to be seen whether the rest of the package will change. 11:42am: Bowden tweets that there are permutations of the deal that would involve Soto and Bell still going to San Diego even if Hosmer refuses to waive his no-trade protection. 11:36am: Hosmer is “not thrilled” about the idea of waiving his no-trade protection to go from a contender to a rebuilding club, tweets Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times. Bowden, meanwhile, adds that San Diego would remain on the hook for Hosmer’s salary over the 2023-25 seasons if he were included in the deal, with the Nationals only picking up the remainder of this year’s money. 11:03am: Hosmer has 10-team no-trade protection and has yet to sign off on the deal, tweets Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Dennis Lin of the Athletic confirms the Nationals are one of the clubs to which Hosmer can block a trade. However, Heyman notes there’s a general belief they’ll find a way to get the deal across the finish line regardless. 10:57am: Eric Hosmer is headed to the Nationals as a means of offsetting salary, reports Joel Sherman of the New York Post (on Twitter).

Am I the only surprised that both Dom Smith and JD are part of the Mets organization? I figured that by now, 2 of the 3 of Dom, JD, McNeil would not still be here

It's got to be strange to have a no-trade clause. If Hosmer is still there after this trade and he knows he'll be behind Bell it's an odd place to be.
What a trade though. I had friends saying that the Nationals got fleeced but that couldn't be further from the truth. Every player there except Susana is an elite prospect and Susana isn't bad. Washington now has a very strong farm system, which they would've had no matter where they sent Soto. This is about the biggest haul I can remember for any trade though.
Now the playoff and WS races have transformed and this is going to be one interesting rest of the season. Does SD have the pitching? I don't know but they sure have the hitting.
Meanwhile 3 1/4 hours left and though I've been in meetings since 2:00 I haven't seen any news come through. I don't expect a blockbuster (Ohtani is not getting traded apparently) but that LH reliever and other reliever has to be on their way at least. Then it looks like we'll be seeing Vientos up here later in the week.

Hosmer still was traded. To the Red Sox with the Padres still paying most of his salary.

SD has great SP and has added Hader as the closer. Darvish, Musgrove, Clevinger, Snell, and Manaea is a damn fine rotation. I don't know anything about their pen aside from Hader.
I applaud them for trading players who may never be for a genuine, 23 year old superstar. Their fans have to be thrilled.
Still cannot fathom Washington trading a player of Soto's ilk. The goal is to draft and develop superstars and that's what he is. So they traded him in hopes that they find another him??
