Congrats to Buck! www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/35035742/mets-buck-showalter-named-nl-manager-yearI admit, when Buck managed the O's I thought he was an arrogant, smartest person in the room type. Whether that was true or whether he has mellowed with age, I love what he's brought to the Mets. When he speaks about the game you get the feeling he's always in control and nothing is over his head. Can't say I had the same feeling from past managers.

that was my feelings towards Bobby Valentine...always came off as a smug egotist...his being clever came ahead of doing the right thing

IMO, Buck is the first really good manager that we've had since Davey Johnson...

I'm not sure he's safe next year. Maybe a forced early retirement with an advisory position in the FO.
Truth as I see it is that Buck made a lot of calls that were questionable. Granted, he made the same calls last year, and it worked out (until the late season slumps and early playoff exit).
Bullpen: Terribly managed. Yes, our BP faced adversary in the it was shortened before the season even began, but I constantly second guessed his decisions, several of which, especially earlier in the season, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
Baby Mets: He stunted their development hard by his constant rotation. There shouldn't have been the need to decry from the rafters "Let the kids play," Escobar and Voglebach aren't some great talent that you're depriving by replacing them with raw players.
Overall DH rotations: Similar to the Mets, Bucks tendency to rotate everyone made it impossible for anyone outside of the core to get comfortable/hot. It's remarkable what everyday playing time will do for a player. He ruined Dom Smith and JD Davis, and while neither are stars, both are having bounce back years due to regular playing time (and have been more productive than our DH for either year under Buck). Sometimes, a bench player is simply that, and keeping them fresh is less important than keeping 9 starters locked in and focused. DJ Stewart could be our 2024 JD Davis, but do you trust buck to give him 130 starts next year to keep him focused?
Getting the most out of your players: This one is far more subjective, but in my opinion, one of the managers biggest duties is the get the most out of your player. You could easily argue that these are professionals being paid upwards of 43 million dollars, and shouldn't need a baby sitter, but that just not the reality of the game. Some managers are simply better at turning talent into wins. Its why you often see the same group rebound when a new manager is brought in. Its clear to me that too many players on this team simply underperformed. 1 or 2, fine. Nearly an entire team? Thats a huge red flag.
I'm in the fire Buck camp - fair or not - in favor of someone more youthful with higher energy - because this team needs a spark. What they need is someone who is going to give them the lollygaggers speech!
