Declines qualifying offer. Boras writes 5000 page book explaining why Conforto is worth a 15 year 12 billion dollar contract.

No one should be surprised by this. The amount Conforto can likely get on either a 1 year deal or a deflated multiyear deal with opt outs will be higher than the 18.9MM.
I'm sure Conforto will get plenty of air time after Boras holds initial court for Semien.

I'm sorry, but if someone wants to give MC more than 18 per year for longer than a year or two, more power to them.
Sign Bryant, resign Stroman, resign Loup.
I would give serious consideration to Sterling Marte as well.
Rotation and pen depth need addressing, as well as deciding whether to go after Baez.
Conforto is way down the priority list, if you ask me. Bora$$ did us a favor, now we get a compensatory pick.

Sadly, 18MM doesn't go as far as it used to. And 18MM with no long term risk? Well that's essentially loose change for some organizations.
I don't disagree that losing Conforto might not be a blessing in disguise, but to circle back, can't be surprised Conforto didn't take it, or that he won't make at least that next year.
As for the pick, I don't like the pick value is less than it used to be. A 2nd/3rd sandwich doesn't hold the same impact a 1st/2nd does. It's better than nothing, but it's far from the value it once was (unless you're a negative rev sharing team).

Although he has regressed I can't help but get attached to lifelong Mets. It'll be strange seeing him somewhere else.
I'm all for signing a couple of free agents (of course) but it's so rare that a team full of free agents can actually put it together. You're potentially talking about Bryant, Marte and Baez all coming in new not to mention whatever starter they sign. If it's Stroman I like the consistency there but if it's another high-priced guy it's even more pieces that have to fit together.
I can't imagine a scenario where they don't re-sign Loup though.

There is zero chance we sign Bryant Marte AND Baez as well as starters. With Cano's money back on the books and after assumed arbitrations, from what I understand, they have a payroll in 2022 of 188MM. While the luxury tax is TBD due to the upcoming CB negotiations, any increase will open up massive competition between the big payroll teams to sign the top guys with their newly found financial freedom.
So based on this, assuming Uncle Steve will be willing to spend to near the threshold we have approx 20MM + whatever increase all teams get.
I also have my doubts about Bryant coming to NY to play a corner OF position. I get the feeling he liked 3B better and if he's going to stick with a corner OF, it will be with the Giants whom he already stated he liked playing for and where 3B looks more obtainable in the near future than it does with the Mets. Money talks, but Cohen in his first offseason didn't seem willing to blow the competition away, so not confident that will change here, and not confident Bryant will land here.
Baez is more likely. Marte is the most important piece in my opinion outside of pitching pitching and more pitching.

F'ing hell. Something I didn't realize and just read. We all know that you forfeit your 2nd highest pick if you sign a qualified FA, right? Well, because the Mets didn't sign Rocker last year, they get that pick back, and that means their 2nd highest pick is 1st round, 14th overall.
essentially, other than Conforto and Thor, here is a list of players that become untouchable in my mind compared to the 14th pick overall.
Brandon Belt, Giants Nick Castellanos, Reds Michael Conforto, Mets Carlos Correa, Astros Freddie Freeman, Braves Raisel Iglesias, Angels Robbie Ray, Blue Jays Eduardo Rodriguez, Red Sox Corey Seager, Dodgers Marcus Semien, Blue Jays Trevor Story, Rockies Noah Syndergaard, Mets Chris Taylor, Dodgers Justin Verlander, Astros

I don't think that we surrender a pick for signing Thor or Conforto.

I don't think that we surrender a pick for signing Thor or Conforto. we don't, that's why it was with the exception of those two. everyone else on that list is a bit closer to being untouchable in my mind when compared to the 14th overall pick.

Oh...other than Correa, I don't see anyone on the list that would be a good fit anyhow. Better fits were traded, voiding the opportunity to offer a QA.

offense, I get it. Pitching, there are a couple of names on there I'd have taken a peek at without the 14th overall pick at stake.
Ray, Iglesias definitely. Verlander on a short deal if he was willing to listen. Heck, I'd of even kicked the tires on Story and taken a serious look at Simien over Baez.

I think that in retrospect, that if you asked me on November 10th: "Would you be ok with replacing Conforto, Loup, Stroman and Pillar on the roster with Marte, Schertzer, Escobar, and Mark Canha; while getting extra draft picks?" I would have been happy, and thinking that we might be setting the bar too high to be realistic...and while Baez played well for us in the short time that he was here, I don't think that he was ever likely going to remain more than a short termer...I am a little disappointed that it appears that Villar won't be back though

I just revisited this list, I do like it's organization...one positive thing about the lockout, is that 18 of the top 30 FA's signed before December 1st; I don't know when the last time that happened...I don't necessarily agree with ESPN's ranking system though, for example: Trevor Story is their 4th ranked 2021 FA, and ex-Met Colin McHugh is in the top 50 By the way, the rest of the starting pitchers in the top 50 FA list all have serious question marks; whether it is injury history or success history
