It's an astounding amount for a non-closing reliever. Did he find the formula for long-term success? If so he's worth it since a few wins could vault the Angels to the top in a division where the Astros might falter a little with the departure of Correa. He sure doesn't have the track record though, and who knows if they get 2021 Loup. I think that the majority of relievers (other than a few) are a bit of a crap shoot...one year, they can be dominant, and then the next year be lit up like a christmas tree... Most guys that are not either top of the rotation starters or closers, tend to have some sort of flaw...whether it's that they can't get out lefty hitters (a lot of RH relievers have this issue); or can't get out righty hitters (most LHP suffer from this); or they can't get a strikeout when needed; or have control issues; or are susceptible to the long ball...or the guys that never work out for the Mets are the guys that rely on defense to get a double play or simply get to balls hit near the gaps... Oh it's definitely a crap shoot, but Loup really came out of nowhere. Sure, it could be that he figured it out, because he was near-untouchable at times. 2020 he was pretty awesome too, but who knows what that means? I would've loved to keep him here even with the regression but that's a lot of money to take that gamble.

Matz to the Cards for 4/$44M. Not a huge overpay for a middle to back end starter, but a significant chunk for a pitcher with a record under .500 all the same. DeSclafani is getting $12M/year for three ansd is a year older than Matz I think, so I guess that's the market.
I would be hesitant on Rodon, he had a great year but was injured late and didn't throw many innings down the stretch and made one short start in the playoffs. The stuff is there but what good is great stuff if it's on the IL?
Gray might be better once liberated from Coors. He also has the talent.
I have no idea what the Mets' targets are at this point. Is it offense? Is it pitching?
And the MLB Network said the Mets were nowhere near the Angels in their offer for Loup. So what are we doing this offseason??

I think the focus is pitching and outfield. They will try to bring back Baez but I don't know how much they would be willing to spend with so many other holes. The best option in the outfield is probably Seiya Suzuki bc he will be cheaper than Castellanos and Marte and the upside could be huge. I don't think the Mets will necessarily be big players for the top SPs on the market but will monitor everyone. I also think if Baez signs, they will look to move McNeil for SP/bullpen help.

Happy to not be paying Matz 4.4MM dollars. I don't think he's an upgrade over Paterson or McGill.
We need to bolster our front/middle rotation guys, we have plenty of back of end talent.
Jeff, I thinik you're a tad high in either years or AAV.
Rodon - I'm thinking 5x100 or 3x70 type deal for him. Ray - on point - but not for us. I don't think the 14th overall pick is worth any FA this year in a class of zero superstars. Different if we were talking the 46th pick over all. Gausman - hoping you're wrong. He's my top target. Stroman - not on your list? I strongly dislike him, but not even on the list?

I think not being players on the top pitching market will be a mistake. They would be GREATLY aided by at least one of the big pitchers to slot into the 2/3 positions which are very weak. I like Suzuki a lot, but he can't play CF. They need to start feeling out the Marte market so they know what their realistic changes are there before the pipvot. It's a shame the Suzuki timeline will be significantly shorter than the Marte one so waiting on Marte could cost them Suzuki.

Isn't Gausman fromn Long Island? Maybe that will work in our favor. Anything at this point.

And Uncle Steve vented this morning on Twitter about Matz's agent. One thing we can say about him, he's not an absentee owner. Is that good or bad??

my patience with the Mets inactivity is wearing a bit thin...can they get anything significant done this offseason?

In honor of the Mets inactivity...how many days since the last sign of life in the Mets lifeboat?

Well, we've signed Eduardo Escobar for two years, $20M. Doesn't move the needle very much, but it's something.

I guess that he's replacing either Jeff McSquirrel or Baez or Villar...not much of an average/obp guy, but pretty decent power and run production guy. Capable of being a starting 2B or 3B... His 162 game average since 2018: 85 runs; 99 RBI; 29 HR; 7 triples; 35 doubles; 161 hits; .475 Slugging Percentage is pretty good for a low batting average type of guy www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/escobed01.shtml#2018-2021-sum:batting_standard

looks like the Mets are also in the process of signing OF/1B Mark Canha...between these 2 signings, makes me wonder if they might be drawing some trade interest in JD/McNeal/Dom

Nice, I have wanted a Marte type of player ever since the Mets lost Jose Reyes to the Marlins. Plus he improves the outfield defense besides adding a speed threat to the offense.

It's a big get, a little longer than I'd like for a player of his age but that's the price of doing business. We have a legit CF with pop and speed. These are heady times! I can't remember if it was Sax or BS who pushed for Marte from the start but...enjoy!
I liked what Villar gave us but Escobar is an upgrade if that's who he is replacing. If Escobar was signed to play 2B, it's a downgrade from Baez but a much cheaper option.
I'm hoping Cano stays home all season.
So, who goes??
