by the way, Ronald Acuna Senior (aka LuisAngel's and Ronald Acuna Jr's father) was drafted by the Mets and played in the Mets minor league system thru 2004 (Binghamton Mets)...His best season as a Met minor leaguer came in 2002 (.292 batting average, .359 OBP, 37 steals, 7 triples, 20 doubles but only 2 home runs) www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=acuna-001ron

Looks like the total lack of any pop in the bat may have been his undoing. Otherwise, solid numbers.

gotta be Ray Ordonez with the glove to overcome that bat.
Yesterday was a good day for our Acuna. Hopefully the first of many.

I still think that Ordonez was over rated by Mets fans...yes, he made some highlight reel plays, but he wasn't Ozzy Smith and he couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag with a sharp machete

Nimmo/Acuna/<Soto??/TBD> I don't see them bringing back Bader, and I see them making Marte more of a bench option/4th OF.

His defense was more than just "some highlight reel plays", but even beyond that, he didn't slug, but he hit ok. Remove his one injury year (clear outlier), and his Mets hitting tenure was about a .248 average and a .307 slugging. Pair that with 3 GG at an all important SS position, and you've got yourself an MLB level player. Not an all-star of hall-of-famer, but I don't think Mets fans are deceiving themselves that he was anything more than he was.

He's been unreal, and even if his bat comes back down to earth, having that kind of SS defensive depth is just as important. I don't know what his official runs saved looks like, but eyeball test, he keeps making plays in big spots that on contact I didn't expect to get made. The beyond sustainable OPS, that's just gravy including the big RBI's and saturday's early HR, mentioned above. (A lot of the power shots have been garbage time, but I won't let that take away from the feel good vibes).
All in all, I would love to pencil him in as our everyday 3B or CF for next year. Spring Training "his job to lose" type of situation.

I have heard rumblings from MLB Network that he's likely going to see a lot of time in Center Field next season (whether it's in Syracuse or Queens will be determined)...they were saying on MLB Central that Syracuse Mets manager Dick Scott said that he looks relaxed in Center Field (he split time between shortstop, 2nd and 3rd in 2024; playing 31 games in Center Field; 30 games at 2nd base; 70 games at shortstop)

scouts have said not to expect a lot of power from our Acuna mostly because he's not as big as his brother...but what I find funny is when you compare the 2 Acuna brothers with Vientos...
Vientos is the tallest at 6'4"; Ronald is 6'0; LuisAngel is 5'8"... Ronald is the heaviest at 92 Kilograms (205 pounds); however Vientos and Luis are pretty much the same weight as each other around 82-83 kg (181-185 pounds);
so while Luis is the shortest, he's bulkier than Vientos...
by the way, Jose Altuve is shorter and weighs less than all 3, and he's had 5 24+ home run seasons and 8 with 13+ home runs (3 of those were 28+)...and he's had at least a .440 Slugging percentage in all 8 of those season because he also hits a good amount of doubles and occasional triples (averaging 20 HRs, 38 doubles, 3 triples, 28 steals over his career...
so even if he's "not his brother", if he can play solid up the middle defense (2B/SS/CF) with speed and Altuve/Nimmo type of power...that is not a bad thing

I think Vientos is mislisted. An old weight never updated.
CF is where I would look to put him if Alonso is on the team. If Alonso is NOT on the team, there are more options.
