I always like to have a thread for ideas/discussions that may not fully deserve their own thread...

Do the Mets sometimes rush guys back into the lineup post injury before they are ready to hit MLB pitching?
Or sometimes hesitate to put a guy on the IL that would be better off being IL'd instead of keeping them "day to day"?

2 examples that I believe might fit the first question: Villar and Conforto
Villar was hitting/running well prior to his short IL stint; He came back on July 4th, proceeding to go 0-8 with 4 strikeouts in his first 3 games back; Takes a game off, and then crushed 2 HRs last night, 1 batting lefty and one batting righty;
Conforto was struggling before going on the IL; Has a 3 game rehab assignment in AAA, going 2 for 11 with 3 strikeouts; Comes back to the Mets, and looks like a relief pitcher with a bat in his hand: 5 hits in 57 plate appearances with 18 strikeouts, only 1 extra basehit and 3 RBI;

as far as the other question, prior to this season, the Mets seemed to have a hesitancy at putting guys on the IL unless they had to, prolonging minor injuries into something that nags on longer.
This season, that doesn't seem to be the case, guys have been on the IL longer than I would expect in a lot of cases...

by the way, Villar was hitless in his short 2 game rehab assignment

The hesitation I have to agree with, guys are day to day for a week, hamstringing the manager's options, then on the IL.
I'd rather be a bit more proactive than the other way around...

agreed...remember when Art Howe told Jose Reyes to man it up when he supposedly had a "day to day" leg muscle injury that Art implied that Jose was being a baby about it...only to find out that Reyes was playing on a broken leg...

The hesitation I have to agree with, guys are day to day for a week, hamstringing the manager's options, then on the IL. I'd rather be a bit more proactive than the other way around... Agreed here. Especially now that an IL stint can be 10 days instead of 15, I'd rather have the healthy body on the bench if they think it will be even close to a week or more. As far as rushing them back, the questions become - Would the player need adaptation time either way. Is the reason they are slow on their return because they are partially injured? Or because the speed of the game at the MLB level takes reacclimating that the MiLB can't provide?
- Is 75% healthy starter be more productive than a replacement player?
Not sure there is a right answer here, but I am glad that we've had replacements that have held down the fort adequately so there hasn't been a need to rush anyone back.

Apparently the Mets tried to get Cespedes back during the injuries this season , but he refused to sign a minor league deal

That's surprising to me, I thought they were done and over with when the topic of Ces came up.
He's done and washed up, if you ask me.

speaking of "done and washed up", I wonder what happens with Cano next season when he's no longer suspended

Bad blood between Cespedes and Mets were under old management/GM. He and Sandy might still have a good relationship after all, it was Sandy that gave him the big bucks to begin with.
Not surprised they only offered a minor league deal, not surprised he turned it down.

speaking of "done and washed up", I wonder what happens with Cano next season when he's no longer suspended my guess is he's still on the team unless they can A) trade him (nobody wants him)
B) he proves he's no longer an MLB quality player, which I believe they will give him ST and April to see.

According to the "Metsrewind" twitter account, this weekend's games will feature a booth of Gary Thorne and Keith Hernandez...looking forward to it, Gary Thorne was one of my favorite Mets voices in recent years...he supposedly got canned for being critical of one of the following (Bobby V; Steve Phillips or Jeffpon)

Thorne is great, we're lucky to have IMO the best broadcasting teams in baseball, both radio and TV.
You can't get better.
