What would you guys give Pete? I read that he and the Mets are talking but nowhere close yet. Not surprising, given his agent.
I have no idea what to offer. Love Pete but he I have a feeling his body won't age well and his skillset, while it can be game-changing, doesn't impact all over the field and teams shouldn't overpay for 30+ year old sluggers. I'd like to keep him but no idea what to offer.

that's a tough one...I felt pretty good about signing Pete UNTIL Boras stepped into the picture...you know Boras is going to squeeze every thing out of the negotiations as possible...playing up his highs while negating to acknowledge his flaws: his numbers vs RHP and on the road are among the best slugging first basemen...but his numbers at Citi Field and vs Left handed starting pitching is not nearly as good....
Where does Boras project him vs reality? IMO, he's about the 5th best overall 1B...Freeman/Olson/Harper/Goldshmidt...and then Pete/Rizzo...and then Abreu (who had an off season in 2023)...

And while not saying that Vientos could fill Alonso's shoes...but...Vientos put up some quality power numbers in the minors, and once he got a chance to play regularly at the end of the season, he showed that he had plenty of power for Citi Field (6 of his 9 HRs were at home)...
If the Mets had a good chance to sign Soto or Ohtani, would it make more sense to trade Pete and use that money on those guys? I would imagine that 1 year of Pete would help rebuild our crappy pitching staff a bit

Stearns said today that it's looking more and more like Pete will go to FA. Boras factor I wonder, or does the brass not believe in Pete enough to pay the big $?

I think definitely a Boras factor, partially a Mets philosophy (Nimmo, Diaz).
Pete should have been extended 2-3 years ago, but at this point, I do believe in the idea of letting him get to FA now. He is asking for as much as he'll likely get if he has a bonkers year. If he has a Judge type year is the only way he'd get that type of 1B market resetting deal. If they are willing to match any offer next year, then they may just pull off another Nimmo/Diaz, and it may be at less than Boris is asking for ATM. Other than irritated fans and giving media fodder to write on, it seems like the smarter strategy to me (now that they've gotten to this point).

I take Soto over Pete all day and twice on Sundays. take this for what you will, but Yankees beat writer at NJ.com (so not exactly the big leagues of sports writers) is "hearing" that soto following a mediocre year is going to look for a 500M contract. If he has a gangbuster year, he's looking for something between 700M and Ohtani. x.com/uSTADIUMMLB/status/1761829463216497042?s=20<side note - anyone having issues imbedding from twitter? Obviously it would hurt, but if this team is struggling again trading Pete at the deadline makes sense. Sure the fans will complain (I've seen a lot of "I'll never watch this team again") but the haul from a contending team should be pretty strong. Ideally I'd hope to get him to stay on a five-year contract but the Boras involvement says it'll take more. What team though is going to sign him through his age 38-39-40 season? I mean that's just a bad idea.

agreed...if Pete walks, it the compensation draft pick really worth more than what we would get in a trade?
and as a result of the iffyness of Pete walking, I think that it's important to play Vientos as much as possible in the infield this season...because, if Pete doesn't re-sign, there is a good chance Vientos is next year's first baseman...he's got the power for the job, but he's still uneasy defensively and needs to get more comfortable with MLB pitching before he potentially replaces Pete....
I'm sure Braves fans didn't think that they would see Freeman in another uniform, but it happened and both teams seemed to be fine with losing Freeman and gaining Freeman...

I right clicked on a twitter video, which brought up a box: "Copy Video Address"; then I left clicked on that "copy video address" box...and then pasted the result:

by the way...Sterling Marte looked healthy today...beating out a bunt in the first...moving well in the field and that cannon of a throw to 3rd base to throw out the guy trying for third easily

A healthy Marte at the top of the lineup will be night and day from what we got last year.
