Since starting this thread, life has gotten in the way, so haven't been able to come back and chat. Overall, I was disappointed with the deadline, not because of the return, which I agree was solid, but because of what it clearly means for the next 1-2 years. I agree with Thomas to a degree that this doesn't mean we're punting away 2024, but it almost certainly means we're not going to Ohtani.
In Eppler's shoes, I like the Scherzer trade. I think he's getting close to washed up, which happens to the best of them, and to get a high yield prospect for 31M in cash next year, I get it. Money was spent, and the prospect was worth the cash. That said, I don't make the same trade for Verlander. He's showing he still has gas in the tank and to get prospects back that we're lower in quality, and to have to eat more money (2025 money), I just don't like it. For the 10M in cash relief, I'd rather of had Verlander on my team for 2024. Houston got a hell of a steal, I really hate that trade despite the good (not sure thing) prospects we got back.
All the rest of the trades, love the Robertson one, that was just like free candy. Pham's return was a guy who had higher hopes but who's stock has dropped a bit in their system... hopefully he can find some of that old magic with a new system. Anything was better than nothing for Canha and Leone.
I'm not shocked Voggy isn't here, but I will be shocked/upset if he plays even as much as 1 out of 3 games. Vientos, for better or worse, should be playing EVERY SINGLE DAY.
I'm also not shocked they didn't trade Raley. Raley has an affordable option for next year and we're definitely going to need to BP arms. Otavino on the other hand, I'd have thought they would have traded. He has a 7M player option, that I'd be 50-50 on whether he opts to get a new 2 year deal. His ERA/WHIP last year was 2.06/0.975 and this year 3.48/1.159, both very respectable years.

I read an interview the other day, whereas they talked about both Raley and Otavino having options for next season...and in the interview, Otavino talked about how much he likes it here and wants to stay put (I believe that he is a Brooklyn native, so likely playing in Queens is nice for family visiting)...

as far as the trades, the only one that really surprised me was Verlander...I am guessing that once Max requested a trade, that Verlander might have as well...he was signed for the next 2 seasons (yes one is an option)...and he pretty much limited it down to a choice between going to Houston or going to the Astros; so it's not like we had a chance to really pick a good prospect haul...personally, I would have kept Verlander and gotten rid of all the other short-timers that we unloaded...I thought that Verlander was pitching better than his overall numbers showed, and would have been a good influence on younger guys

This makes the assumption that we don't add payroll for 2024. Based on comments since the trade, I see them adding more than say 19M next year to stay under the lux tax threshold.

Will Uncle Steve punt on next season? I'm not yet convinced he will, there will be some solid pitching available this off season. We will need more than pitching.

Yeah I am not fully convinced that the only plan is to wait until 2025... other than unloading Max and Verlander, every one else was either a FA at the end of the season or just a role player...
And neither Max or Verlander were demonstrating that they were worth their salary...he reduced his obligation to them while getting prospects...

I also think there was some bad feelings with Scherzer and Verlander together in the dugout. I'm not sure why, and I know it's not really an unusual opinion, but there was less leadership and more pressure on the team. They're not going anywhere this season, but almost every player has been performing better since those two have been gone.

Little more on DJ: www.nj.com/sports/2023/08/revived-mets-outfielder-was-once-best-college-hitter-in-the-country.htmlRevived Mets outfielder was once ‘best college hitter in the country’ DJ Stewart New York Mets' DJ Stewart played under Buck Showalter in Baltimore. DJ Stewart has been making the most of his recent opportunities with the New York Mets, taking advantage of this second chance to play under Buck Showalter. The outfielder had been the No. 25 overall pick by the Orioles in 2015, while Showalter served as Balitmore’s skipper. Their reunion began when Stewart signed a minor league deal with the Mets in February and he later had his contract selected on July 4. Since then, he’s hit .246 with 6 homers and 12 RBI in 65 at bats. It’s another chance to show his former manager what he can do. “The thought was to take the best college hitter in the country [in 2015] and [the Orioles] thought DJ was,” Showalter said Tuesday, via Mike Puma of the New York Post. “There was some thought whether he was going to end up in the outfield or first base. He always was a guy who walked to places, I remember that about him, and had some power. I talk a lot about guys that are 27, 28, 29 years old, sometimes they start figuring some things out and I hope that is the case with DJ.” Stewart was drafted by the Yankees in the 28th round of the 2012 MLB Draft but did not sign and instead attended Florida State. In three seasons he slashed .344/.481/.570 with 27 home runs and 168 RBI. Stewart made his major-league debut with the Orioles in 2018, Showalter’s last year as manager. He recorded 10 hits including three home runs in 40 at bats that season. “It’s a blessing,” said Stewart, via Puma. “One of the biggest reasons for me signing here was my relationship with Buck [Showalter] and him knowing whatever I am capable of doing when I’m healthy.” Stewart has spent most of his career on the injured list or in the minors. He appeared in just three major-league games for Baltimore last season.
