The way that I figure it, I am a baseball fan who's favorite team is the Mets...

I have a mlb.tv account that I paid for, regardless of how the Mets are performing...
when I was younger, I would watch pretty much every inning of a Mets game that was humanly possible (as in, if I was at home, the Mets were on...if I was not, I would try to record it to watch later)...
however, we all know that the Mets have a tendency to really let you down when you think that they should be one of the top teams...

this season started off with a lot of hope and then really let the air out of the balloon...and then they started to bring up the "baby" mets, which instilled a bit of "at least they are looking at the future" enthusiasm for a moment to only be zapped by the letting the prospects rot on the bench while we give Escobar, Voglebus, Pham and Cahna every possible chance to get turn their seasons around...

So lately, I've been watching a good portion of the Syracuse Mets games on mlb.tv...
and since the Reds have called up electric prospect Elly De La Cruz, I have been paying attention to his feats...
so far in 20 games: 9 steals; 3 Home runs; 5 doubles; 2 triples; 11 RBI; 20 runs scored; .301/.356/.518/.874 hit for a cycle (while stealing a base on top of that) 11 errorless games at 3rd base; 9 errorless games at shortstop;
On the kid's first game, his manager had the audacity to bat him cleanup and starting at 3rd base (even though he's a shortstop)...and the Reds crowd gave him a standing ovation before he even saw his first pitch....

last night, I watched the Cleveland Guardians score 14 runs in a 14-1 win...Amed Rosario, the guy that the Mets said didn't take enough pitches worked out an 8 pitch walk just before Jose Ramirez launched a line drive grand slam barely clearing the fence to start the scoring...Rosario later had an RBI triple to score leadoff hitter Kwan from first base to make it 9-0; and later scored the 4th run in a 7 run inning...
by the way, when Rosario first got to CLeveland, he was taking a lot of pitches...getting deep in counts (like the Mets wanted)...and it resulted in an increase in walks, but also an increase in strikeouts and lack of hitting the ball crisply...
Terry Francona benched him for a few days and told him to do what came natural to him: which was be aggressive in the strike zone and not to worry about taking pitches and launch angle...Rosario got back to the hitter that he was originally in the Mets farm system, which was very similar to a faster version of Jeff McNeil, a guy that hit the ball hard to all fields (for Rosario, it's a lot of hard line drives to Right Field and Right Center; which allows him to lead the league in triples with his speed)

part of what I think that the Mets issues are is the cookie cutter "take pitches" and swing for the fences approach...Rarely ever do you see the Mets manufacture runs anymore...not a lot of line drives, it's either walks, strike outs or home runs...Mets are one of the worst teams in the majors at hitting doubles...

I agree with everything you wrote with the exception of this. 1) I don't think they are the "take pitches" mentality team that they were a few years ago. I don't think guys like Marte, McNeil, Alonso, Lindor are struggling because they aren't swinging enough. Voggy, sure, but that's his philosophy, not the teams. 2) I also think they did go for line drive guys... they just aren't hitting line drives. This team wasn't ever going to be known as a power first team. The problem is when your high average guys are hitting 220-250, you're not going to score in bunches. I'll add one thing I don't think you touched on. With Pham being a great example of what happens when you stop jerking guys around. He's getting every day playing time, and he's STAYING hot. As opposed to every time a guy makes strides, his turn is over and next guy is in to "stay fresh". That to me is a Buck thing and why he's a player's manager, but its not great for the Team success. Let your regular 9 play everyday, and rotate the bench guys in sparingly. Yes, it might hurt them when they do play, but it'll help the rest "stay hot!"

Going back to the basic "do you watch other games" subject, I'm going to be doing that now thanks to YouTube TV. I'm loving YTT compared to cable, but this is a killer. Now I have to figure out an alternative plan. I think I'm going to get the MLBTV package for August and September, but I have a complication. I just got let go from my job and I'm in the market and I've decided to do some traveling so I'll be missing Mets games no matter what for the bulk of July.
I know it's not pure baseball fandom, but I'm in two very long-term fantasy baseball leagues and that drives my viewership of other games. I don't enjoy rooting against teams so I haven't watched a minute of a Yankee game in about 20 years, and I'm not going to watch the Braves or Phillies. I do watch teams with exciting players like the Orioles and Reds now when they're on, but I'd say 98% of my baseball viewing time is Mets games.
Oh, and I'll watch no matter what. Losing is painful, but I'd rather hear GKR talk for a few hours a night even in bad seasons than suffer the alternative. A game on the TV is a great summer night to me.

yes, back on topic - I watch and go when I can, no matter if the season is win/lose/draw. Come August/September, when they are out of it, my viewership definite can wane, but never extinguishes. All and all, I'd say I watch anywhere from 80-100 games, and when not watching, I get scoring updates on every game to my phone to track. Because of that time commitment, I really don't watch more than a handful of non-Mets games a year.

when I was in Fantasy Baseball, it felt almost necessary to pay more attention to other teams' players...particularly the younger ones that you might be able to play at multiple positions...I had Albert Pujols when he first broke into the league, and with Yahoo Fantasy rules, he qualified at multiple positions

Sorry to hear that Thomas - I hope you can find another job when you want to start working again.
I watch a lot of the Jays because all of their games are on a Canadian sports channel that I have. I watch some others on MLB Network but mostly watch that for the live check-ins and recaps. I find you can learn a lot from some of their analysts, while others are simply talking heads or there to fill a demographic check box.
I don't play fantasy baseball anymore - found it became too time consuming.
I used to watch a lot of Mets games, but this year has really killed my appetite to watch another Mets team finish well below expectations.
I agree on the opinions here - even MacNeil isn't hitting this year for average. If he isn't hitting for a high average his worth drops significantly.

There's been quite a few players that have seen their averages drop this season

Thanks both of you. It's kind of part of the media agency world, the risk that clients will cut spending and you lose your funding but it hadn't happened to me yet in 24 years. I've been lucky. Now I'm trying to finalize that trip while looking for something else. I feel doubly lucky that I can do both and not worry about things...yet.
