First the Mets dodged things with Rocker having Tommy John surgery.
Now it appears that they dodged a bigger one by the Rangers stealing deGrom with that huge contract.
How soon before Lugo needs TJ? And Correa had further issues with his leg that is held together with screws and duct tape?

Terrible news for Jake. About to turn 35, I wonder if he ever makes it back?
Yes, we avoided a potential disaster there.

Didn't see this one - just posted in the other DeGrom thread - but looks like the Mets medical staff, long known as the butt of many jokes, has perhaps under Cohen figured it out?
Rangers twice outshining Mets on their eagerness and now twice bitten.

I feel badly for Jacob, he would be a HOF candidate and a legend if he could just stay on the mound. It's also good for the game to have the best players on the field. It is nice though to not worry about that whole "when will his season end" drama anymore.
Lugo also has really fallen off. After a few starts fans were complaining about not signing him but those voices are a lot quieter now. Just as suspected he can be great for a short period but he hasn't shown the endurance (yet). Sure, he could build up arm strength and end up being a full-season top-level starter, but that doesn't seem to be there yet.

I for one had him as my top choice. I think he'll be better next year, but so far, it does feel like a bullet dodged (except for the fact that we used the same money at a higher rate for someone no longer on our team... so silver lining is still pretty thin...)

Two words.
Carlos Correa.
Forget a bullet, we dodged a rocket there.

Two words. Carlos Correa. Forget a bullet, we dodged a rocket there. Agreed but at the same time, he is in the playoffs and the Mets aren't... There are a lot of contributing factors to the poor play this season...things like the WBC once again screwing up Spring Training, our closer ending his season before it ever began, the rule changes that our old goats didn't seem up to the task of keeping up with, our underperforming dual aces, our crappy bullpen, our lack of hitting for average... But also we did the back page move of signing Correa...and then the physicals voided that...and then we went into the season in limbo at 3rd base, which should be one of your strongest players both defensively and offensively

Well, the expectation was that Baty would be better than he was. Of course he was always going to be a defensive liability but that offense sure looked good in AAA. Correa is in the playoffs but I really don't think having him on the team was the missing piece for the playoffs here. As you note Saxon just too many facets of the team went wrong this year.
Meanwhile nothing shows just how ridiculous the internet is than Buck's firing. Before the firing all I read were complaints about how Buck is too old and out of touch, and now all I see is how Buck didn't deserve to be fired and the team is lost. It's a microcosm of the online comment world.

I don't think Correa would have made the difference in us making the playoffs, and I'm glad to not have his contract hampering us next season. From what i read, the injury is going to have more of an effect each year, not less. There are better players to buy for the kind of scratch they were offering. (26M per year for 12 years - 315MM total)

agreed...also winning the AL Central is not the same as the NL East...IMO, they should find a way to make these contracts for more of a reasonable amount of years (6 years guaranteed, with the rest of the 10 years based on vesting of how many days you were on the active roster in the past 3 seasons)

Why would the player accept that when someone will guarantee it all? Everyone knows that you're buying the first 4-5 years. Fingers crossed for the next 3. Then expecting to carry dead weight for the rest (which in Correa's case would have been:
29-33 (5 prime) 34-37 (4 fringe) 38-41 (3 OLD)
You just hope that he's the star you bought during the prime, he produces something during the fringe. And that you can get SOMETHING when he's old and DHing, but more likely than not, you've cut him and are eating the $27MM per year. That all becomes so much more untenable with someone with a bad medical report...
and 100% AL Central is not the NL East. AL Central total payroll is 626M. NL East excluding the Mets is 649M (so only 4 teams vs 5 is still more). AL Central had 0 teams above 200MM. NL east had 3 (includes Mets). Agreed Sax, AL Central is not the NL East.
