CMF asked a question in the chat - where do we go from here? Escobar, Baty, Vientos, outside option?
My takes are:
1) Unless he blows the lid off the discussion during ST, leave Baty in AAA. The youngin has a total of 6 games played at the AAA level. Let's get him some seasoning at that upper level and then promote him when he's ready for the bigs.
2) Escobar is a solid plan B. Is he Correa? No one is going to confuse the two, but he is a solid glove with some pop. I know he pushed through a lot of injury last year, so hopefully we see more of the September player than the guy who struggled through much of the summer. If we do see the struggles than, we have other options, and we go with the hot hand.
3) DH: ST competition with Vientos as my lead candidate. DO NOT SIT HIM AGAINST RIGHTIES. Very tired of seeing cold hitters struggle because we are platooning the DH spot. Pick one, give them the job, end of story.
4) Write Othani a blank check for next year. If Vientos has proven he's a MLB hitter by then, you can either find a position for him (3B, LF) or you can trade him for a haul (young, proven, controllable).

Things I do not want to see happen. 1) Do not trade Baty. Kid crushed AA. He has the tools to be the 3B of the future. Can't have a 300MM man at every position, he's one of our best chances to have cheap talent on the field. 2) Do not make Alverez the DH to start the season. He's the catcher of the future, let him catch every day. If by midseason we are desperate, then view it as an option. 3) Baez. Not funny.

nice...you created a new thread...I really hated at the old stomping grounds where Dru would merge everything on a topic into one, and keep adding to what should have been an old, dead archive thread

Agreed. IMO - cleaner this way. If we were talking about Carlos, I'd have posted there, but this is not about Carlos, and the other thread wasn't a 3B thread... If months from now, Correa blows out his leg, that I would try to post back to that Carlos thread as relevant to that conversation.

Kinda agree with giving Baty at least until May in AAA. I would try to give Vientos a lot of playing time early on. Split his time between 3B, 1B, LF and DH.

My understanding is that Vientos is not a good fielding third baseman. It's probably best to keep him at 1B and DH, especially with Escobar, Guillorme and even McNeil able to cover at third in the potential absence of Baty until May or June.
Spring training should be very interesting for some of these positional battles.

If he shows he can stick with his stick, then give him fielding to worry about. Don't want him taking the fielding errors with him into the batters box. And also 100% on the this should be the best ST since Pete forced his way in. Do we know if they are giving Matt Allen an invite to get him a small taste?

Do we know if they are giving Matt Allen an invite to get him a small taste? You know, I haven't heard anything about Allan for ST. I know he was supposed to pitch at the end of last year. It's crazy how long it's been since there's been a potential top of the rotation prospect in the organization.

Hasn't been one since Fulmer - who was right on the heels of essentially promoting one of each of the following per year; Harvey/Wheeler/DeGrom/Thor. Fulmer would have been 2016/2017. Not from lack of trying. 1st round picks on Justin Dunn, Anthony Kay and David Peterson. Just took a peek at the Mets top prospect list. Doesn't look like anything on the horizon...

Yeah I've been keeping tabs on it and it's just discouraging. Tidwell and Zeigler have some hype around them but they won't be here fore a few years and who knows if they'll go through the typical TJ surgery. You hate to be pessimistic but it's been feeling like a rite of passage for years.
The "good" thing is that Dunn, Kay and Woods-Richardson haven't done much. W-R still has some promise of course but still very much up in the air. Hey at least there's money to fill in the spots now unlike years past, and maybe when Verlander and Scherzer are done the guys scheduled for 2025 or so will be close to ready.

I think thats the exact thought process. That near 50M per year was a stop gap for the system to catch up. And don't forget about when Othani joins the club next year

Tried to quote and then write my own reply, but my cursor got stuck inside the quote and wouldn't let me out...so here is kind of what I originally tried to write: From what I understand, Mike Vasil is having a pretty solid season for AA Binghamton. despite the record. The attached link is a video of Vasil striking out a couple top prospects. Looks like he's got good movement on his pitches, not a 100+ MPH guy like Thor was...
