HUH???
Carlos Correa agreed to a 12-year, $315 million deal with the Mets hours after it was reported that the announcement of his deal with the Giants was being postponed because of unresolved medical results from his physical, a major league source confirmed to The Athletic. The Mets deal is also contingent on a physical. Here’s what you need to know:
Correa agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract with San Francisco last week, pending a physical, The Athletic confirmed. But the deal, which would be the biggest in team history, had not been publicly announced by the Giants. A Giants news conference, originally set for Tuesday at 11 a.m. PT, which was expected to be Correa’s introduction, was postponed on Tuesday morning. Several other media appearances Correa had scheduled Tuesday were also canceled, The Athletic confirmed. Before signing with the Giants, The Athletic reported that the Mets and owner Steve Cohen were showing interest in Correa.

from what I read, Cohen is on vacation in Hawaii...Boras contacted him yesterday to renew negotiations that were in progress when the Giants deal was supposedly finalized...all the other owners were sleeping, while Cohen was at dinner talking to Boras...so that is part of how it was a weird time of the night for the deal to be announced

I am stunned by this and Uncle Steve's reaction to the luxury tax: "What the heck is the difference? If you're going to make the move, make the move." Total sea change from the previous ownership.
And if fans don't show up this season, they won't ever show up.

I wonder if this is part of why our GM is our GM...when he was in LA, the Angels owner did all the big star negotiations...now Cohen is the big dog GM, while Eppler handles the smaller details of day to day operations

That's the most shocking Mets move I can remember since the Santana trade years ago. This one of course has the added factors of thinking he was already with the Giants and it happening overnight. I get up early to walk the dog these days (she's 16 so walks happen constantly) and was sure it was a dream when I woke up later. What a bizarre series of events.
Meanwhile let's see if the buying the pennant strategy works. I was always against it when it was the other team but hey it's fun when it's your team.
They did need another bat and Correa has the track record, but nobody seems to know what the medical issue really was. It's hard to believe it's something that would effect him long-term assuming the front office did their homework and he should be comfortable here.

My take - 12 years is still too long, but at 26MM AAV, I assume he gave some back there from his potential for a longer deal/more guaranteed. Likely could of had a 32 - 35MM AAV for 8 years, but he took the guaranteed extra 40-60MM guaranteed, and Steve gets to pay less luxury tax on the annual. Never loved him as a player, so hoping he wins me over

Hoping everyone is having a wonderful holiday. Lots of drama on this one. Wonder how it shakes out.

happy holidays to you as well...
yeah, this is a weird situation...particularly when you consider that the Mets have several young 3B options...yes, he's a proven commodity but that is a lot of money/years for a guy with a leg held together with duck-tape and shrink-wrap

Yeah I know Cohen wants to make the huge "win now" impression but Correa is certainly a risk. There's a lot of impatience here with fans but I feel better knowing the team is doing a full evaluation before committing that kind of money.
I'm not crazy about the square peg round hole fit either though. They have Baty, potentially Mauricio (though I keep hearing CF for him instead of he is MLB ready) and Escobar for the next year. It's great to have the ability to just throw around money but a big injury risk at a position that can be filled otherwise might not be the right place to do it.

is the drama ever going to end? Either sign or find another team that is a sucker for Borass's nonsense...

He's in no rush, as the only premier player left on the board, and multiple suiters (especially at a reduced demand), he can take all the time in the world.
If anything, Steve Cohen likely feels more pressure than Correa does because despite spending half a billion dollars this offseason, if he loses Correa, he's still going to have an angry fanbase... which is laughable, but the situation he's in...
