I was still hoping they'd be in on Senga, and if not, get Chris Bassitt back who has proven he can handle NY.
It's fine, its just means Cookie MUST be your #3 now and not have another rollercoaster season... And if Verlander or Scherzer miss time, Cookie is suddenly your #2, which isn't great...

Don't love this signing, don't hate it, depending on where he slots in. As a 5 maybe a 4, it's palatable. If we are counting on him for more than that it's a sign the season has gone to shit. Cookie as the #3 all season...Yikes.
And the Walker money in Philly is a bit nuts as well. Cost of doing business in the NL East I guess.

All the more reason to stop trading away all our non-elite minor league depth. Yes, we held onto our creme de la creme, but we're severely depleted in being able to replace our BP and back end starters without maying insane contracts like 72 million for Taijuan Walker???
Along that note, crazy that Walker at 18 million is making nearly as much as Wheeler at 22 million. What a steal that ended up being! It's one of the reasons I wanted Rodon, I think he's going to be looked at as a similar steal as prices are discounted due to past injury concerns from TJS.

Yeah Rodon seems to have put the injury issues behind him. It's really hard to get excited about Quintana and it'll be a huge disappointment if Senga, Rodon or Bassitt aren't also in the rotation.
Having said that though Quintana has been better than I thought over the last couple of seasons.

I looked at his baseball reference page too fast and just looked at the lines and not the year. 2017-2021 was shaky.

We've got 1 and 1a (Max and Mr Upton). We have 4 (Quintana). We have several 5s (Carrasco, Peterson, Megill).
I'd like that solid 3.
Pipe dream would be Rondon, but I would love to have Bassitt. A rotation of Max/JT/Bassitt/Quintana/Carrasco can win a ton of games.
With Peterson and Megill as innings fillers for the inevitable injury, I'd take my chances with that group.

Fang, the Wheeler steal continually eats away at me.
Do you think Rodon will not end up getting crazy money too?

Rodon would be great but there's certainly some excitement around Senga also. I feel like Senga has a better chance of landing here since all of the variables align. He wants to be in a major city with a championship-caliber team and there's no fee or draft pick required to sign him. He's a complete mystery to me but the front office appears to be impressed.

Fang, the Wheeler steal continually eats away at me. Do you think Rodon will not end up getting crazy money too? Just came across this one. Answer was 6 year, 162 million (27 AAV). Continues to make Wheeler's 5 year 118M (23M) look good by comparison. AAVs similar comparing the exponential salary growth elite players continue to see over the past 10 years. That extra age 35 year locked in for Rodon vs Wheeler is clutch as I don't think any pitcher can reasonably expect to be guaranteed that type of deal at age 35. Far from impossible, but more tend to show decline by then, though Wheeler is still looking pretty good and only 2 years away.
