Sax posted an interesting question in the London thread. Rather than answer there, creating a separate thread. When Alverez is healthy (which is soon), who goes? Nido, or Torrens?
Torrens has a hot start, but his states for the past 5 years make me think its not likely to maintain.
Career: Torrens: 229/291/362/653 Nido: 214/251/313/564
Options: 0 for both Salary: Torrens 1M, Nido 2M
Defense: Similar, but you have to assume Nido knows the staff better.
Manager Preference: Seems Torrens got back to back starts for a reason.
Clearing Waivers: Nido's 2M likely gets him through waivers easier, but Mets were able to snag Torrens for cash, which means as of a week ago, Torren's stock wasn't too high... so maybe both?
knowledge of staff: Gotta think Nido has the edge.
Who are you sending down?

I like Nido...but Torrens is the hot hand both defensively and offensively...he seems like the opposite of Daniel Murphy, in the appearance that his brain reacts well to the immediate situation (aka, Murphy had a lot of brain farts)

apparently it's been decided: nypost.com/2024/06/11/sports/francisco-alvarez-returns-as-mets-make-decision-on-backup-catcher/Francisco Alvarez returns as Mets make decision on backup catcher
By Dan Martin Francisco Alvarez is back from the IL in time for Tuesday’s series opener against the Marlins. The Mets catcher has been out since April 19 after tearing a ligament in his left thumb. With the return of Alvarez, the Mets also made their decision with their backup catcher situation, with Luis Torrens sticking around and Tomas Nido designated for assignment. Torrens was acquired from the Yankees last month as a replacement for Omar Narvaez, who was released after a disappointing — and expensive — stint in Queens. Torrens has impressed both behind the plate and offensively since his arrival. And The Post’s Mike Puma reported that Nido has enough service time to refuse being sent to Triple-A Syracuse.

McNeil might want to step up his game...

McNeil might want to step up his game... granted, they were mostly against Lefties, but warning shots fired for sure. Long stint on bench, Baty learning 2B. McNeil while making a fair amount isn't making THAT much that the salary gives him job security.

Torrens had another caught stealing tonight...I believe so far, he's allowed 2 steals while throwing out 4

current guys: 19 wins; 8 losses; DFA'd guys: 16 wins; 30 losses;
I haven't looked up their Catcher's ERA yet for the season, but the Mets pitchers have been pitching better of late, with the starters going slightly deeper into the games

this link doesn't really cover the 2024 Mets so much as the 2023 Mets catching situation...however it's a good article about the importance of catchers, not just from the offensive side of things...would have been good to see an article like this looking at Jerry Grote and Gary Carter, back when catchers rankings weren't mostly based on their offense blogs.fangraphs.com/2024-positional-power-rankings-catcher/
