The Mets got another bad start from Adrian Houser on Thursday, but help for the rotation is on the way, as they are set to promote top pitching prospect Christian Scott, The Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed.
The 24-year-old Scott is expected to make his MLB debut Saturday at Tampa Bay after a strong start to the season at Triple-A Syracuse.
With Scott set to go Saturday, he could be added as a sixth member of the rotation, since the Mets are in the midst of playing 13 games in 13 days a stretch that will end next Thursday.
The Mets mostly went with a six-man rotation a year ago to benefit Senga and could do so again, which could mean Scott will be here to stay.
“I think Christian has done everything we could have hoped and expected,” president of baseball operations David Stearns said this week. “He continues to throw the ball very well. I think there’s this balancing act when you call up a prospect of when is the prospect ready and then when is there the major league need? Often those need to overlap and intersect and for some guys down there we’re probably just waiting for that intersection to occur.”
Scott is 3-0 with a 3.20 ERA in five starts at Triple-A this season with 36 strikeouts and just six walks in 25 ⅓ innings. And he’s been even better following a shaky season debut, when he allowed three runs in four innings.
Pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said this week that in addition to his fastball, Scott had added a sweeper, which is paired with a more traditional slider — along with a splitter.
“He’s really taken a leap forward the last few months,’’ Hefner told The Post’s baseball podcast, The Show. “He’s doing exactly what he needs to do.”
Scott was drafted by the Mets in the fifth round in 2021 out of the University of Florida, where he primarily pitched out of the bullpen.
